Combining foods

Mix once she's tried the parts

After a few single foods, combine them freely. Add one new food at a time to things she already likes.

Three parts to a plate

Aim for a starchy food, a vegetable or fruit, and an iron-rich food such as meat, fish, egg, lentils or beans.

Three parts to a plate
  • A starchy food

    For example, potato.

  • A vegetable or fruit

    For example, broccoli.

  • An iron-rich food

    For example, lentils.

Iron likes vitamin C

Plant iron is absorbed better with vitamin C. Pair lentils, beans or fortified cereal with tomato, pepper, broccoli, orange or berries.

One new allergen at a time

Give a new allergen on its own day, early in the day, so you can watch her for two hours.

Flavour without salt

Herbs, garlic, onion, mild spices and a squeeze of lemon add taste. Leave out stock cubes, gravy and soy sauce.

Ideas to start with

Lentils with pumpkin and pepper, salmon with potato and peas, porridge with mashed berries. See the recipes for more.
